Not long ago while preparing for the Windows 8 launch AMD has decided to tell about the advantages in graphics that will appear after the Windows 8 release. Beginning with AMD Radeon HD 7000 generation, AMD graphic cards are created with the support of two main technologies: DirectX 11.1 API and new driver model called WDDM 1.2 (Windows Display Driver Model 1.2). Together these two technologies provide new functions for Windows 8 and compatible software. It should also be mentioned that WDDM technology and tis functions are also supported by hybrid microprocessors A, C, and E, and graphic cards AMD Radeon HD 6000 and HD 5000.
Target-Independent Rasterization development (DirectX 11.1)

AMD mentions that this standard work nest of all with graphic cards AMD Radeon 7000 HD together with driver AMD Catalyst 12.8 (and above) and 3D monitor.
Improved video playback via Direct3D 11
Nowadays video materials in games and interactive scenes are usually use different DirectX versions. While the gaming process is displayed with either DirectX 10 or DirectX 11, for playing video episodes DirectX 9 is often used. This API mixture from time to time makes the introduction of both types of content more difficult. This problem was solved with the help of API unification in DirectX 11. It will let to improve the quality of video insets in games, as they will be able to use improved technologies of DXVA video playback hardware acceleration.
Screen rotation advantage with Windows 8
As you may know, in Windows 8 a lot of attention will be paid to tablets. So tablet users won’t be puzzled with the problem of switching between portrait and landscape modes anymore. AMD says that driver model WDDM 1.2 makes this process smooth and trouble-free.
Monitor switching without screen blinking
When working with graphic card some users might have seen their screen blinking while performing some processes: installing a new driver, switching from built-in to discrete graphic card, restoring the system after sleeping mode. Thanks to the WDDM 1.2 graphic driver will be able to move smoothly from one OS component to another, thus reducing the number of screen blinking or eliminating them at all.
Optimized power consumption
New DirectFlip mechanism is developed to improve power consumption while watching videos or other full-screen modes. This is realized with the help of not changing visualization modes for pop-up messages or Alt+Tab window switching. DirectFlip also provides smooth switching between full-screen apps and desktop mode. The support of this function is realized in AMD Radeon graphics with WDDM 1.2 support.
