Just about everyone has figured out by now that commenting on other people’s blogs can be an effective tool for driving traffic back to your own blog or website. However are you really maximizing on what you can get out of commenting on other people’s sites, or are you falling into the role of the generic commenter? The next time you decide to come out from lurking in the internet shadows and actually leave a comment on someone’s article try to incorporate some of these tips:

1.    Become a real person When Commenting

Every time you leave a comment on a blog or website there is a little box that pops up next to your comment where a picture of you can go if you’ve set up an avatar. Set up the avatar! Don’t be the same general picture that everyone else is, put a face to your name. It will help people recognize who you are more easily.

2.    Comment often

If there is a blogger that you want to launch a connection or friendship with then comment on their site often so that you can establish a presence on their website. Commenting once every six months isn’t going to make you recognizable as a regular reader.

3.    Make it count

The aforementioned being noted, you also have to actually write out a well-thought out comment that grabs the blogger’s attention. Don’t just say you liked a post, tell the blogger why you liked the post, how you can relate to what they’re saying, or something that forges a connection between the two of you.

4.    Voice your opinion

Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion if it differs from that of the blogger’s, but do it in a way that shows that you appreciate their opinion and explains why yours differs. It’s never all right to put down someone else for their own opinion, but it is ok to shed light on a different viewpoint.

5.    Actually read the post before Commenting

Some people comment solely to generate leads back to their own website. It’s obvious when someone hasn’t read a blog post and is just commenting to drop a link. Don’t be that person – instead read through the entire article and leave something insightful in the comment’s section. You will drive far more traffic back to your website that way.

Commenting on other people’s blogs can work to your advantage or end up being a huge disadvantage depending on the type of comments that you leave. Leaving positive comments, even if they’re in disagreement with the blogger, will work far more to your advantage than leaving run of the mill or rude comments. Be the type of commenter that you want on your own blog.
