We love our gadgets, but it seems they’re affecting our attention spans. Studies show that since the year 2000, when the mobile revolution began, our attention span has dropped from 12 seconds to just eight. Congratulations, humankind; you can’t even focus for as long as a goldfish! You could dwell on this sad state of affairs of course, or you could just be glad you’ve got second screens to amuse you when your attention wavers.

It seems most of the things we’re doing on our second screens aren’t related to the programs we’re watching at all. Some people look for more information about the actors and actresses on the TV and the show they’re watching or participate in social media discussions. However, it’s much more common for viewers to spend their second-screen time checking emails, surfing the web, and texting.

It’s a good thing that new phones like the reinvented Galaxy S6 by Samsung have long battery lives because it seems we love using them while we’re binge-watching our favorite shows. More than two-thirds of second-screeners say the practice makes viewing TV “somewhat better,” while 13 percent say the habit makes watching TV “much more enjoyable.”

Most people use a second-screen simply to multitask or complete the things they need to do while they’re watching TV. More than half of people also like to seek out a second screen to stay entertained during ad breaks. Forty-three percent of people admit they use a second screen because the program they’re watching simply isn’t interesting enough to hold their attention.
