Samsung Galaxy S2 was the last flagship device of Samsung, the world largest mobile phone manufacturer. The company’s most recent smart phone launch is in the form of Samsung Galaxy S3, a handset which offers more features than its predecessor device. We take a close look at the specifications and features of the two handsets and see what distinguishes them apart.


Shape and size- the dimensions

Both the handsets are elegant in their designing with the Samsung Galaxy S3 measuring a bit more than Samsung Galaxy S2. S2’s dimensions are 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5 mm while the dimensions of S3 are 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm. The S3’s weight is also on the higher side. It weighs 133 gm in comparison to the S2 which has a weight of 116 gm. The curved edges of S3 give it a better look but the built quality of s2 is great.

Operating system

Both the phones run on Android, with Samsung Galaxy S3 running on the newer version i.e. Android 4.0.4. The OS of Samsung Galaxy can also be upgraded to the Galaxy S3. Both the phones have the Touch Wiz user interface of Samsung.
The S3 has some intelligent features which make it a better handset than S2 in terms of OS. While texting, if the user pulls the phone to his/her ears, the phone automatically calls the person the user is texting.


The new Samsung Galaxy S3 clearly leads in this segment as it offers the 1.4 GHz Exynos quad core processor. The Galaxy S2 has the dual core 1GHz Exynos processor. According to Samsung the new quad core processor of Galaxy S3 consumes 20% less power.

Screen size and display

Both the handsets have corning gorilla glass protection for screen with S3 having the second and more advanced version of the technology. The S3 has a bigger screen as well and higher resolution (1280×720 pixels in comparison to Galaxy S2’s 800x 480 pixels). The S3 has a great screen display all-together.

Memory/storage capacity

Both the phones have 1GB RAM storage. The S2 comes in 16 GB and 32 GB internal memory models. The S3 also comes in the 64 GB internal memory model form in addition to 16 GB and 32 GB models. The memory of both the phones can be increased by further. The Galaxy S3’s memory can be increased by 64 GB and S2’s by 32 GB by using the external memory micro SD card.


Both the phones have got the 8 mp primary camera which offer features like auto focus, led flash, back illuminated sensors, video capture at 1080p, touch focus, image stabilization, touch focus, face and smile detection. Etc. Both the phones have secondary cameras for video calling.

The S3’s camera also offers you other advantages like minimal shutter lag, capturing of stills and videos at the same time, choosing the best photograph from the many photos taken and detection of known faces in given pictures when using social networking. The S3 also offers full HD playback at 1080p.

The front camera of the Galaxy S3 recognizes when the user is viewing the screen and brightens the screen light for better viewing experience.


Both phones offer 3G/HSDPA and HSPA+ and also cover every band of Wi-Fi. The S3 has Bluetooth 4.0(the newer and more energy saving version) in comparison to the Bluetooth 3.0+HS version of Galaxy S2.

Music options

Both the phones have stereo FM with RDS with the S3 supporting polyphonic ring tones as well. The music player of the handsets can play music files in different formats like MP3, AC3, WAV, MP4, eAAC+, Div X ETC, H.263, H.264, and FLAC etc.

Battery life

Samsung has given Galaxy S3 the larger 2100mAh battery in comparison to the 1650mAh battery of S2. Increase in battery size will help the new phone to support the quad core processor, the bigger screen display and other functions in a more effective manner.

Conclusion – Samsung Galaxy S3 Vs S2

The Galaxy S3 can be said to be better package in comparison to its older sibling, the Galaxy S2. The S3 is priced around INR 36,000 and   S2 costs approx. INR 26,400. For those who want a feature laden phone and can pay a bit more, the S3 seems to better choice. It offers many features which are absent in Galaxy S2.
